Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yván Gil on Monday rejected Chilean President José Antonio Kast’s recent statements about resuming bilateral ties, calling the remarks contradictory and accusing the Chilean leader of prioritizing aggressive rhetoric over genuine diplomatic dialogue.

“This is no way to speak seriously about consular or diplomatic relations,” Gil wrote on his Telegram channel. “You cannot ask for dialogue while sowing contempt, nor talk about respect while attacking.”

The foreign minister specifically questioned why Kast would refer to “restoring relations” while simultaneously turning every statement into an attack against Venezuela and Venezuelans.

Gil further alleged that Kast is addressing an extremist audience uninterested in an effective diplomatic solution. Instead, he claimed, the Chilean leader seeks a resolution “with a lot of noise, a lot of posturing, and very little seriousness.”

The Venezuelan official’s remarks came in response to a declaration by Kast, originally published by 2001OnLine, in which the Chilean president stated that “the departure of President Nicolás Maduro will allow several countries to restore consular relations, and later stable diplomatic relations, with Venezuela.”

President Nicolás Maduro was kidnapped by the U.S. after the bombing of Caracas in the early hours of January 3. Currently, Delcy Rodríguez holds the role of acting president of Venezuela.
